Soothing Matcha Tea

Starting your day with Soothing Spiced Matcha Tea provides a calm, sustainable energy boost and a gentle sense of awareness and focus. Matcha and turmeric are the superstars here. Give it a try in place of a cup of coffee, and let us know how it makes you feel.

Soothing Matcha Tea

Ingredients

6 oz plant-based milk (plain, unsweetened)
 6 oz water
1 tsp matcha tea (powdered, no additives)
 ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  tsp ground cinnamon
 1 dash nutmeg
 1 dash ground pepper

Directions

1

Heat the water and milk in a small saucepan on the stove top. Heat until you see steam, but don’t let it boil (this curdles the milk and is not good for matcha’s nutrients).

2

While the water and milk mixture is heating, combine the turmeric powder, ground cinnamon, dash of nutmeg, and ground pepper in a small bowl.

3

Once the water and milk mixture is hot, turn off the burner and add the matcha and the spice mixture to the pan.

4

Whisk well until all of the powder is dissolved. Matcha can get clumpy so it may take a vigorous whisk for a minute or two. Alternatively, you could use an immersion blender.

5

Sip, relax and enjoy. This would be a great time for a mindful tea meditation!

Chef's Notes

Substitutions
Don’t have matcha tea? Steep a green tea bag in 6 ounces of hot (not boiling) water for 2–3 minutes while warming 6 ounces of unsweetened plant-based milk on the stovetop. Once the milk is hot add the spice blend to it. Pour the green tea into the milk and spice mixture. Stir and enjoy!

Substitute fairly traded cocoa powder for matcha tea to get a similar boost in energy and antioxidants!

Make it sweeter
If this is your first matcha experience, it might taste a little bitter to you. What’s neat is that the more you drink it, the less bitter it will taste; your tastebuds will adjust! You can add 1 tsp of maple syrup or coconut nectar to temper the bitterness.

Add one teaspoon of vanilla extract.

If you’re using a blender instead of a whisk, add 1–2 dates.

Make it creamier
Omit the water and use 12 ounces of plant-based milk.

Add 4 ounces light coconut cream.
