There are some basic rules for meals that Ayurveda prescribes that should be adhered to
get its full benefits.- Eat according to the seasons:
Always go for fresh foods that are in season
and keep the weather in mind when planning
a dosha balancing meal. Eat more soups during
winter and fall or Vata season and more salads
and fresh fruits during summer or Pitta season.
- Try to include all six tastes in each meal:
Sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.
- Eat flavours which sooth your dosha:
Vata: sweet, sour, salty.
Pitta: sweet, bitter, astringent.
Kapha: Bitter, pungent, astringent.
- Don’t stuff yourself:
Eat only until ½ to ¾ of your stomach’s capacity
for maximum digestive power.
- Watch your food combinations:
Sweet and Sour don’t mix. Neither do salty
and sweet, hot and cold.
- Vegetarian meals are preferred.
